That is that

And the Vikings are now 3-0; Texans are um what’s that?? Oh yeah 1 -2. Darn, so close.

Favre didn’t look too bad his first full half as a Minnesota Viking though he sure wasn’t a 12 million dollar QB. With the “potential” broken ribs he still managed to stick it out with 13 of 18 for 142 yards. There were a couple passes where I had to ask myself what is he thinking? Yet we did manage to hold off any turnovers. Matt Schaub looked pretty good as well. Even with his sprained ankle he managed to stay in and drive to a Texan touchdown. Schaub completed 10 of 14 for 108 yards. The secondary QB’s also had their share of successes. Tarvaris pulled it off again on his short run.

The game for the Vikings was racked with stupid penalties. I have to say I was not impressed with the number of calls we received for good reason. Thirteen penalties for 85 yards is just plain sick. The Texans on the other hand had a mere 5 for 35 yards and I do have to admit the roughing the passer call on the Texans was bull. He was clearly executing the tackle before the ball left Favre’s hands.

Of course the star moment was good Ol’ AP running the opening play for 75 yards to start the game with a touchdown. There was also the two beautiful interceptions. Defensively the team seemed improved to me. They managed two turnovers and Jared Allen scored a nice sack.

The Vikings offense seems to be starting to gain a rhythm together. I cannot say they are in sync but getting there, provided the quarterback can last a couple more games. All together the passing, receiving and rushing game were pretty sound. If we can get a handle on our false starts we will move ahead leaps and bounds.

I definitely think the Vikings should have easily dominated this game tonight and the stats clearly show it was a close game. But this is still the learning stage, throw in a wrench like Favre and any team can be thrown off base. Again, he had a decent show this evening but it will take a lot more to convince me he is the "golden boy" he is built up to be.

So, Rick…… one more week until the real games begin. I sure hope your preseason isn’t a precursor to what the season will hold.

Preseason Week 3

It must have been because I was running late getting back from the gym. Adrian Peterson broke a 75 yard touchdown run from scrimmage on the opening drive of the game. I was in my car listening to the game on the radio. I missed the 3-and-out by the Texans. When I finally got to watch, I must say, this game became a struggle for the Vikings.

In looking at the overall stats, passing yards were edged to the Texans. Again one could say the run defense was the killer for the Texas (180 yards allowed). But really, when you take out the 75-yard run, as a team they ran for 105 yards with Peterson only gaining 42 yards on 10 subsequent attempts. The Texans only ran for 67 yards. The Texan defense really settled down and basically clamped down on the running game. Let's not forget 2 sacks on Mr. Favre.

That's not to say mistakes weren't made on the defensive side. Chester Taylor was sandwiched hard between 2 defenders but was able to keep his footing. Missed tackles and blown assignments can be a killer.

What kept this game for the Vikings was again a solid defense (although it could be argued the starting D-line was well matched by the Texans' starting O-line) that produced 2 turnovers and 1 sack (along with the intentional grounding penalty against Matt Shaub). Otherwise, this game was a wash as the difference maker was the opening drive run by Peterson.

That said, Favre obviously looked much better than he did week 2. He played 2 quarters + 1 series in the third quarter. I was actually rather shocked at how he was able to keep that long third quarter drive alive for so long, but to be fair he did have a lot of help (by both teams *sigh*). But let's not forget the cheap shot on Safety Eugene Wilson. He had to leave the game because of a knee injury resulting from the illegal block. Doesn't Favre supposedly have a cracked rib? Something tells me that little play is going to cost Favre a lot more than 15 yard penalty assessed against him, and I'm not talking about fines from the league.

Oh yeah, someone please explain to the officials that Roughing the Passer cannot happen while the quarterback still has the ball in his hand!

Even though we lost the game, I liked what I saw from both the first unit offense and first unit defense. Even my better half here would have to agree that they made the Vikings look very mortal tonight. The prospects for the Texans are looking good this season. Are they elite? Only the progress of the season will tell for sure, but look for some noise to be made in the AFC South this season.

As for the Vikings, the aforementioned mortality was made apparent tonight as with all the hype surrounding the team, they should have manhandled this little pitiful expansion team. The fact that they were not able to do so has to make one wonder how the Vikings are going to fare against a truly elite team, especially when NFC North rivals Chicago and Green Bay have without a doubt addressed their weaknesses over the offseason.

Congratulations, Mardi, you win this round, but it's still a long season, my dear.

... That is the question

But before we make erroneous parallels to Hamlet in our football discussions, it's time to digress.

I have to disagree with Mardi on the defense of the Vikings. I thought the defense looked pretty solid against the Chiefs. Granted, the Chiefs are not exactly striking fear in the hearts of their opponents this year. The Viking defense did was what expected (3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles vs. 0 and 0 for the other team, not a bad night at all) and got the job done when it counted.

That being said, the Viking offense looked like it struggled a little bit to me. Jackson did indeed have a decent night, but he was far from where he should be at this point in training camp, especially against a weak Kansas City defense. There were plenty of questionable decisions made by Jackson and I feel that more often than not his receivers bailed him out. The offense as a whole looked rather out of sync. Indeed, a quick look at the stats shows that Kansas had a better game offensively than did the Vikings, but it was the turnovers that ultimately cost them the game.

The talking heads at the game spent a lot of time apologizing for Favre's performance. The main thrust of their apology was that he needs time to get used to his receiving corps. These were local guys making this analysis, so they're obviously going to spin. Keep in mind, however, the national media were saying this about Favre last year with the Jets... he must have needed a long time to get used to his receiving corps.

On to the Texans game. All I can say is that was ugly. What started out as a fairly competitive game quickly got out of hand as no one (not even the Saints) expected the Saints running game to produce like it did on Saturday night. This is especially unusual considering the Chiefs have a much better running back in Larry Johnson than the Saints have in Reggie Bush, who did not play. The first unit defense had its hands full that night containing the run, which ultimately was the main reason behind the success of the Saints. Those 2 interceptions that lead to scores didn't help, either, but I digress.

Conner Barwin continues to be a bright spot on the defensive line. It isn't often a 7th rounder shows this kind of flash and if he keeps it up, he should be a lock as the first or second defensive reserve behind Mario Williams and Antonio Smith (not a bad pair to follow). Brian Cushing is also expected to make his debut on Monday against the Vikings. The whole vibe of the Texan defense this year is different than the past couple of years and while we are going to experience hiccups early on, I expect this unit to gel and become a very solid defense. The only question mark at this point is the secondary, where we still have our resident malcontent moaning about having the Franchise tag stuck on him.

The stage is set for Monday. I expect Favre to be in the game a lot longer this time, but I don't expect the results to be much better. I think it's going to come down to the run game again. This time, however, look for a much upgraded linebacker set and a hungry defensive line.

To cry or not to cry....

12 of 15 passes for 202 yards, scoring two touchdowns! That's right the Vikings quarterback had some awesome stats from Friday nights game. Oh but wait, that's not a number 4 we saw out there, it's #7 Tarvaris Jackson. Let's take a look at Favre's stats, 1 of 4 for four yards. That is not a typo, it's truly four yards. John David Booty had better stats. Aren't we glad we paid 12 million for that!? All right enough of that.

The Vikings showed a good game Friday night, there were a couple tense moments. Even a couple times I caught my breath. All in all it was a good game and a good learning experience. The defense has some work to do, they were not showing tip top shape as predicted. Again, we must remember this is preseason and a time to learn and grow. I think if Childress plays his cards right we can definitely see the Vikings succeeding this season.

Now let's talk about that game on Saturday..... Oh what's that 38 - 14...... Wow, that's awesome, if your not a Texan. The Saints owned the Texans on Saturday. I didn't get to watch the game but I caught some highlights. I am going to leave this one to my counterpart to explain.

Argh!

Well they did it. After the media circus, the "Yes I will, No I won't" they signed Favre. Let me start with this disclaimer: I am an avid Vikings fan and I always will be. That said, now let me go bang my head against the wall.

While I must agree with other Vikings fans I do believe we are a QB away from a championship, I am really not so sure Brett Favre is that QB. The man is 39 years old, while I am not implying in any way that 39 is old, the chances of getting a full successful season out of him are pretty slim. One has to wonder what exactly Childress is thinking when just three weeks ago Favre stated he "didn't feel like physically I could play at a level that was acceptable." and now all those concerns seem to be gone. Brett seems to have really been saying he didn't want to get out there and do two a day practices like the rest of the team.

Sage was starting to look promising, one has to wonder now when Brett gets injured (and I say when, not if) how he will feel being pulled in after he has been told by his coach twice he just isn't good enough. This will however allow us to release Tarvaris when he becomes a free agent this year.

The last thing I want to point out is this: Last year the Jets head coach, Eric Mangini, was jumping up and down in excitement as he turned his team over to Favre, confident he would lead them to victory. Hmm, where is Mangini now? Oh that's right, he was fired..... Could we be so lucky?

Umm...

So after all the months of speculation, the rumors have finally borne fruit. Brett Favre is a Viking now. I must say, as a football fan, I don't know if this is a good thing for either Brett or the Vikings.

First off, Brett is 39 years old. I'm sorry, but very rarely does a quarterback succeed at this age, no matter what pieces are in place around him. How will his throws go? Will he be able to get back into game shape by Week 1? What about his recent shoulder surgery? The doctor who performed the surgery made the summation that Brett had actually been playing with a torn rotator cuff for the past couple of years. Up until a couple of weeks ago there were all sorts of doubts about his health, yet in the past 12 hours they all seem to have disappeared.

Let's also not forget the legacy part of this. Brett was a great quarterback who did some very good things for this game. He had his struggles with painkillers, but bounced back and gave all he had every year to win. There are some who would compare him to Michael Jordan. Unfortunately, I don't see the good comparison here. Jordan couldn't let basketball go and spent a couple of seasons with the Washington Wizards. While his stats were still in the upper echelon, the argument could be made that Jordan was more a distraction for the Wizards than anything else. In the end, Jordan did not go out with the champion legacy he worked so hard to build. Brett Favre is headed in the same direction. Honestly, after losing to the Giants in the NFC Championship game in 2008 he could have retired with his full legacy still intact. He lost that legacy with his run with the Jets last year, and is now in danger of sinking even further down.

Along with my counterpart here, I have more than a few family members who are Vikings fans. They, along with Mardi, all agree that the coaching of the team is, shall we say, less than stellar. Even if Brett Favre plays at half the level of his 2 Superbowl runs, will he be effectively utilized? The coaching staff also worked to put the pieces in place for either Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson... now that work is scrapped and they only have 4 more weeks until the season opener - you know, when the games actually count. My cousin in Duluth mentioned that the Vikings were only a quarterback away from the championship. He may be right, but coaching is still the same X-factor it was the past few seasons.

That being said, I don't find this deal to be good for Brett, the Vikings, or for NFL Football. As a football fan I hope I'm wrong... but then again, maybe this will teach those Vikings fans some humility *wink*.

Oh yeah, let's not forget Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, Gus Frerotte, and Brad Johnson - all 35+ year-old quarterbacks who have recently started for this team. I don't think any more needs to be said about those names.

Comments are welcome.

A good start

First let me say "Nice Start" to the Texans on their win.... Now with that nicety out of the way let's dive into this.

To first answer your question Rick, Sage had 10 of 13 completions for 91 yards. A perfect record? No. Acceptable? Yes. The question now stands will Jackson be able to pull it together in week two? Judging by week one's game I am not so sure.

We now head into week two of preseason, with regular season growing closer each day. Tension builds, anticipation mounts, well maybe that's just me.

For those who are curious I will include the Vikings schedule for you, I know Rick secretly has it memorized so he can watch some good football but we won't tell anyone....

Preseason:
Aug 14 MINNESOTA @ Indianapolis (W)
Aug 21 Kansas City @ MINNESOTA
Aug 31 MINNESOTA @ Houston
Sep 4 Dallas @ MINNESOTA

Regular Season
Sep 13 MINNESOTA @ Cleveland
Sep 20 MINNESOTA @ Detroit
Sep 27 San Francisco @ MINNESOTA
Oct 5 Green Bay @ MINNESOTA
Oct 11 MINNESOTA @ St Louis
Oct 18 Baltimore @ MINNESOTA
Oct 25 MINNESOTA @ Pittsburgh
Nov 1 MINNESOTA @ Green Bay
Nov 8 Bye Week
Nov 15 Detroit @ MINNESOTA
Nov 22 Seattle @ MINNESOTA
Nov 29 Chicago @ MINNESOTA
Dec 6 MINNESOTA @ Arizona
Dec 13 Cincinatti @ MINNESOTA
Dec 20 MINNESOTA @ Carolina
Dec 28 MINNESOTA @ Chicago
Jan 3 NY Giants @ MINNESOTA

There you have it, and so the countdown to season opener is set. Of course I am sure as most of you can imagine August 31 will find Rick and I glued to our seats..... who will win? Who will have the first bragging rights?

Your comments and predictions are welcome.

Texans Win!

The Texans won their preseason opener by a score of 16-10. The first unit looked very solid and Matt Schaub was a perfect 7-for-7 for 70 yards (what were Sage's stats from the Vikings win, Mardi?). But the big story of the evening was the 2nd unit. Their play was solid and consistent through 2 quarters.

We were missing a couple of starters from this game. Dunta Robinson is still whining over his contract (he's mad about the "Franchise" tag being placed on him) and our top draft pick, Brian Cushing, is out with a knee sprain. There's no telling when Robinson will finally come to his senses and realize that if he wants to play he needs to sign. Cushing, however, is slated to be back by Week 3 of the preseason. If he doesn't come back that could spell trouble as Gary Kubiak and company have planned their defense around him starting at Outside Linebacker.

This game also marked Kyle Shanahan's debut as the main offensive playcaller. He called a good mix of plays and showed a good feel for how the opposing defense worked. This kid has a bright future in NFL coaching (being Mike Shanahan's son doesn't hurt, either).

I'm sure Mardi might want to make mention of the point differential for this game versus the Vikings game. So, if she wants, I will let her when she makes her next post.

Well, everyone, comments are welcome. Let me know what you think.

Texans Schedule and Random Mumblings

Each February immediately following the Pro Bowl we get treated to who our favorite teams will be matched up against the following season. Unfortunately we're stuck waiting for the schedule until at least the draft in April. Imagine my excitement when I found out the Patriots were coming to town. Having grown up in New York I do feel a little bit of an attachment to the teams of the Northeast, but I digress. Without further ado, here is the full schedule for the Texans:

Preseason:
Aug 15 HOUSTON at Kansas City
Aug 22 New Orleans at HOUSTON
Aug 31 Minnesota at HOUSTON
Sep 04 HOUSTON at Tampa Bay

Regular Season
Sep 13 New York Jets at HOUSTON
Sep 20 HOUSTON at Tennessee
Sep 27 Jacksonville at HOUSTON
Oct 04 Oakland at HOUSTON
Oct 11 HOUSTON at Arizona
Oct 18 HOUSTON at Cincinnati
Oct 25 San Francisco at HOUSTON
Nov 01 HOUSTON at Buffalo
Nov 08 HOUSTON at Indianapolis
Nov 15 Bye
Nov 23 Tennessee at HOUSTON
Nov 29 Indianapolis at HOUSTON
Dec 06 HOUSTON at Jacksonville
Dec 13 Seattle at HOUSTON
Dec 20 HOUSTON at St. Louis
Dec 27 HOUSTON at Miami
Jan 03 New England at HOUSTON

Tonight starts the preseason for the Texans. In fact, the game just started. There are high hopes for the Texans to get in the playoffs for the first time this year. Athlon Sports has the Texans going in to the 6th seed of the playoffs and 3rd in the AFC South. They could go higher as Payton Manning was looking very much like a mortal man last night, but I digress...

On a side note, Athlon Sports has the Vikings going 3rd in the NFC North and not making the playoffs. I'm curious to see what Mardi has to say about that. Oh yeah, don't forget that week 3 Preseason matchup... that should be interesting to see how Sage handles himself in that one.

There will be more to come as right now I just want to watch the game. Have fun, everybody.

Here it Comes...

Your 19th nervous breakdown? Maybe, since what is coming has been known to cause a lot of rifts between people. What is coming is a brand new season of NFL Football. Yes, ladies and gentleman, it's time for another season of smash mouth gridiron fun, complete with the most ruthlessly efficient marketing machine in the world. We just can't seem to get enough.

I'm Rick, the Texan half of the Texan vs. Viking team. You may know me from such blogs as Primordial Light and Musical Discovery Project. I was born in Minneapolis but hail from Houston, TX, where my football team is on the verge of a breakout season. The other half of the team, Mardi, should be along any time now to introduce herself.

First off, congratulations on the Vikings winning their preseason opener versus the Colts. Although this is no indication of what will happen starting week 1 of the regular season, I must still give them their kudos.

The concept is simple. Each week Mardi and I will make our win-loss predictions for the entire week's schedule. In the event of a tie, we will use the point differential from the Monday night game to break the tie. This is a friendly competition between 2 non-pundit types who happen to love football but not necessarily the same team.

In between Sundays we will offer our own little insights and maybe even trade jabs at each others teams. It should be fun.

Comments are welcome and encouraged... but keep in mind this is a family blog.

Welcome to Texan vs. Viking!
